My DD is 8 months and doesn't seem to be able to be awake for longer than 2 hours. This means she has 3 naps a day still and goes to bed at 6.00. She's not a great night sleeper - better than she used to be, but still feeds at least twice (she's bf but solids going v well), and then up for the day at 5.30 - 6 if I'm lucky
Do you think I'm letting her sleep too much in the day? How long can your 8 month olds stay awake for during the day?

Hi, I don't know how much I can help as my DD is only 4.5 months, but thought I would respond just to bump your post. FWIW, my DD sleeps from 8pm until 7.30am ish and does only sleep for a couple of hours during th day but I know we are v lucky. Perhaps you could try cutting down her day time sleeps a bit? I know that is easier said than done. Plus, would you prefer her going to bed a bit later, and possibly getting up a bit later too?
Sorry I can't be of more help.

RubyBuckleberry · 29/04/2010 19:06

my ds is 7mo and sounds exactly the same. not much help sorry?!

blue22 · 29/04/2010 19:13

Ruby it is great help to hear your DS does the same - makes me feel that it is 'normal' and I'm not missing some magic sleeping trick
I have thought about putting her to bed later, but she absolutely can't do it. I can stretch her till 6.30/6.45 at a push, but she doesn't want to feed, have stories, she just wants to go to bed, and as soon as I put her in her cot she smiles and shuts her eyes (very cute). Also if I put her to bed later it cuts down on my wine drinking tidying up time

Mmmm, wine drinking was meant to be crossed out - haven't quite got the hang of this

yep sounds the same - i have tried to keep him up longer too but it is meltdown city!

i have given up tbh - he's pretty willful and will do it at his own pace

my dd is also 8mo. at home, she has just one long nap in the morning, and occasionally 20 mins in the car at about 4ish. at nursery though ,she has 3 short nps. she goes to bed at 6 too and sleeps till about 6.15 a.m.

chabbychic · 29/04/2010 19:44

DD is 8 months.

She sleeps 6.45pm til 6.45am ish.

Has a half hour nap 9.30-10 or in car/buggy if we're out and about. I don't let her sleep longer than that.

She's started having 2 hour naps straight after lunch which is lovely! Then she's out like a light at bedtime.

blue22 · 29/04/2010 19:44

Olivo - do you notice that if she has more naps in the day she sleeps less well at night?

DD is 8 months.

She has a 20 min nap at 9am in cot, 1hr at 11.30 in the pushchair and 30/40 min at 3pm in the car. I put her to bed at 6.30pm the latest as she is really tired by then. She will then sleep until 4am and then scream until I feed her, she will then snooze in my bed until 5.30/6am if I am lucky! I would love to find a way of moving her waking up time to 5am, 4am is sooo early! Unfortunately I don't seem able to settle her in any other ways than feeding, last night I tried to shush and pat, but after 1hr I gave up and fed her....

trixie123 · 30/04/2010 08:18

my DS is almost 9 months and generally sleeps 7-6am (though lately its been more like 5.30 which is total pain). until a couple of days ago he was on a three nap strategy, up for 2hrs, down for 1 hour, up for 2, down before lunch, then one more nap in the afternoon but just the last couple of days he has been all over the place and seems upset when left to settle (was always great at this before). Am wondering about separation anxiety kicking in?). Anyway, for ages he was usually only awake for 2 hours before getting grouchy so I'd say yours isn't unusual

belindarose · 30/04/2010 09:54

My DD is 8 months and her sleep patterns have changed recently. She used to sleep loads in the day, but now only has 2 naps if we're at home or using the pram (will always sleep in the car, so if we're out she gets extra!). Always 9am (her imposed routine, not mine!) and this is 45 mins - 90 mins usually (shorter rather than longer in general). After a few weeks of awful nights, waking up for hours at a time and refusing to go back to sleep, she's back to 7.30 - 7 ish with a feed around 4am.
Improvements have been since I started the following (may be completely coincidental, but I'm not changing any of them!):
Evening walk in the sling after tea. 20-30 mins
Ditching of baby monitor. This was accidental as it stopped working one night and she/ I slept all night. I obviously didn't hear and respond to little noises. I definitely hear her if she wants me!!
Stopping holding/ cuddling her to sleep. If she falls asleep while feeding, that's fine but otherwise I put her in the cot awake and sit beside her. If she cries I cuddle her and put her back when happy. Otherwise I leave her to it. Last night I left her playing in the cot and she fell asleep after 20 minutes.
Don't know if any of this will be helpful to you, but it's working for us at the moment.

Blue, she sleeps better on the days that she has a good long nap. it seems to be that good quality daytime sleep gives her a better night. quality, not quantity

have had to ask them not to put her down so often and to wait a bit in the mornings. seems better but watch this space!

mountainmonkey · 30/04/2010 20:11

ds is 7.5 months. He has 2 short naps during the day (about 40mins) then goes to bed at 7ish and sleeps til around 8. He generally wakes up twice for bf but goes straight back to sleep. think I have it pretty easy TBH.

notnearlyasblondasiwas · 30/04/2010 20:15

My DD is 7 months and she has 30 mins at 9.30am then goes down at 12.30pm for 2 hours and then sometimes has a short 20 min nap around 4pm-ish. Is in bed by 7.30pm and sleeps through until 7am. But anymore daytime sleep and it all goes pear shaped.

minxofmancunia · 30/04/2010 20:26

DS is 7m he has a nap in the morning from 9.30 til 10.30/11ish then a nap at 2ish for an hour. Goes to bed at 7.30 wakes up between 7 and 8 FOR THE TIMe BEING!!!! I'm very aware this could all change.

We only acheived this sleep pattern at night by (whisper) cc for 1 night at 6.5 months.

PomPotty · 30/04/2010 20:28

2 wakings a night , my nearly 8m DS wakes between 6 and 10 times a night, ho hum, just thought I'd try to make you feel better
