3wk baby not sleeping anything like 16hrs+ per day

I realise it's still very early days but my baby is hardly sleeping during the day, other than 10-20 mins naps after she's fed. I'm growing to dread evenings and for the past 1-2 weeks she's awake the whole time and if she's not feeding she is grizzly and gets progressively more irate as the evening wears on. She will eventually sleep anything between 12-2am and then she will sleep until 7-9am which is the only saving grace as it means i'm sleeping too. Although it may sound enviable I don't know if I'm doing the right thing to let her sleep so long at night without feeding (during the day she feeds every 2-3 hours so hoping she's got enough by 1am). I also worry that it's not good for her to go so long without sleep during the day esp when I read in so many books that newborns sleep 16hrs+ per day. I don't have any routine emerging but I'm guessing that may be a tad early?? What should I be doing? How can I get her to sleep during the day when she seems so bright eyed? Should I be waking her during the night to feed? (the thought feels me with so much dread)

some babies sleep up to 16 hours per day (that includes night as well)

many don't and mine never did!

it is very early days - are you breastfeeding? DD was on the breast all evening (cluster feeding).

Getting 5 hours out of her is fabulous

you can try swaddling to help her settle in the day but she will find her own rhythm

DD was a catnapper at this age and was also awful at night!

My six week old didn't sleep much during the day either a few weeks ago. I started taking her up to a quiet room and feeding her while lying in bed - she would then sleep two hours or more with me lying beside her. Over the week i then starting moving her sleeping body into the moses basket and now she sleeps there quite happily a couple of times a day - gives me a break! But i wouldn't worry about it unduly. And it also sounds like she is getting plenty of sleep so don't wake her for feeds whatever you do!
