If your 5 month old baby is sleeping 9 or more hours in one go at night, then I would love to hear about your experiences - could you answer the following questions?:

  • what is your bedtime routine (if u have one) with your baby including times?
  • is your baby breast/bottle/ or mixed fed?
  • is your baby on solids - if so, how much?

many thanks in advance!

my DS is 5.5 months and usually sleeps through, 8 to 10 hours. (mind you, he woke up 10 times last night and I have no idea why, but this was a first. Sometimes he wakes once in the night but only needs the dummy/ sip of water)

  • we do bath around 6.15- 6.30, bottle around 6.45, bed around 7. he is usually asleep shortly after 7 , or falls asleep on the bottle.
  • now only formula fed
  • he's not on solids. we are only just starting to wean and he is not really keen, so if I'm lucky, he'll have a couple of spoonfuls of carrot/ pear.

Up until a week or so ago I was doing a dream feed at 11p.m. but recently he has been so fast asleep that it was taking him 40 minutes to finish the bottle and I felt a bit guilty interrupting his sleep. May have to reintroduce it if he starts waking again.
he likes to start the day at 5 a.m. but that's a story for another thread

My 5 month old DD sleeps 4 hours straight on a good night, so I'm watching this thread with interest for tips. FWIW she's excl bf and not on solids, and we do have a bedtime routine......

Im beginning to think it doesnt matter what their routine etc is! My first baby slept from 6wks old and my second baby is now 6 months and is now up repeatedly at night. They have similar routines as I am very into that. So have decided that it just depends on the baby!

My last 2 were sleeping 7-6am from 5 months. Breast fed, solids beginning at 6 months. Most important thing seemed to be sorting out their daytime sleep. We followed a routine that had the baby having a short morning nap, then a midday sleep, then bed at 7 (it was Gina Ford). I found that if I didn't regulate their daytime sleep, it would have a knock on effect on their nighttime sleep.

my first was sleeping through then

we had no routine at all, not in the day, not at bedtime
just went with the flow

he was bf on demand

no solids

DS2 slept through (barring illness) from 4mo, DS1 didn't until we did CC at 9mo. They both had the same bedtime routine, both were BF and started solids at 6mo.

I'm convinced it's pretty much the luck of the draw!

DS (18wks)- we've followed his lead 95% of the time. The other 5% we've tweaked.

He feeds every 3 hours in the day. He is FF at 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm. The day feeds are about 5oz. The 7pm feed is 8oz.

He naps when he wants to in the day. This week he has woken at 7.30am, back to sleep for 45mins at 9am(ish), 2 hour-ish nap about 1pm. Quick half hour at 4pm. He will not nap on his own though, only on me which is not so good, but I quite like it!

By 7pm he is ready for bed. PJs, gro-bag, feed in dark room. Place in cot sightly awake. 7.15pm- asleep. He wakes at 5.30am for a quick 10min snack (3oz) then goes back to sleep until the alarm.

We try and pack more milk into him in the day. If we feed him later than 4pm, the big 7pm bottle is not drunk fully.

DD on the other hand didn't sleep through until she was nearly 4yrs old and was still waking in the night at 18mths for milk! We've tried very hard with DS not to fall into the same habits we did with DD- failing though but he is just a different child that likes his sleep.

hi
my DS is just 6 months and has been sleeping through since he was about 2-3 months (with the occasional exception). He was in his room from about 3-4 weeks old - we would all wake each other up and once DP went back to work he (DS) had to go in his own room. We start bedtime at 6.15ish with a bath - usually one of us goes in with him and he has quite a good kick and splash about. Then its food and bed by 7pm. We rarely hear from him again until at least 6am, usually more like 7-8am. Until he was about 4 months we did this but starting an hour later cos he had more sleep during the day.
I always mix fed and he always had formula at night because a) he slept more b) he took it quicker. One time I thought I would BF instead I was up for much longer with him. I stopped BF at 4months. We started weaning at 4 1/2 months as he started waking up and are still just playing around on the edges of it with purees, HIPP porridge and rusks mixed with milk. He has three "meals" a day and at least 20fl oz of milk. He naps about twice a day (an hour-ish each time) but sometime has a little early evening snooze downstairs about 5pm as he is getting grumpy and won't make it to bath time. Hope thats helpful.
