what age did you take your child out of Grobags?

Ds has always been very wriggly and, though I initially resisted on the basis of cost, I found Grobags were the only way to keep him warm and to prevent him from getting his feet caught in the cot bars. He is now nearly 16 months and has been sleeping without a Grobag in the hot weather. Is it worth trying blankets/duvets or should I leave it another year? (The Grobags I have are my sister's and she is due any day now and so will be wanting them back shortly. If I keep using them I will need to shell out!)

I left ds as long as possible... he is now 3 and just about out of them..
I found them really helpful as he too is very wriggly and kept waking up when he got out of the covers, the grobag stopped that.

Another benefit, he couldn't get out of his cot(!) and even now he stays on his bed in the morning (as tho he still has his grobag on) waiting for someone to get him up!!

Dd (19mos) is out of hers but only because it's been so hot. Once it cools down she'll be back in one mainly so she can't climb out, as unicorn says, it's v useful!

He made lots of fuss 'The duvet doesn't keep me really warm' etc. but has settled to a duvet after about 4 nights. I think teh great thing about Grobags is so easy to wash, no taking covers on and off etc.

DD is 2 and loves her Grobag! She goes and gets it when she gets tired and gets excited when we zip her in for bed, clapping and saying, 'Yeah!'

Dd (23 months) is just out of them, because it's so hot. She's hopefully going into a bed soon anyway, so she'll have blankets then, which is when we changed ds over (just over 2)

Looks like I am going to have to splash out and get some then! It's just that because he is such a sicky baby we need at least three.

They're worth it, IMO. We had two towelling ones - both bought from the US where they're a bit cheaper. One for when she was newborn, b/c it was the hottest summer on record (2003), and one for now.

She loves it! She calls it her 'bag'.

expatinscotland, where in the US did you get your towelling grobag? I would love to know! We get our grobags when we're in Amsterdam.

My dd is still in her grobag (she's 2, but the size of a 3 y.o.). I've found that the grobag has a very calming effect on her. Often, just before bed, she's bouncing off the walls and can't sit still. As soon as I put her in the grobag she sits quietly and will read books. It's an amazing transformation!

uptofive.co.uk was the cheapest place for them when I was looking recently.

My mom got them for her at 'Babies R Us' in Houston, Texas. She sends almost all off DD's clothes - they're almost all from a store called 'Old Navy'.

If it's really hot, I sprinkle her towelling grobag with Johnson's cornstarch before she goes down and she sleeps on towelling sheets we found in Mothercare.

AnnaK - have you tried looking on e-bay. That's where I got my dd's 2 tog one, and just waiting for a 0.5 tog one to be delivered which I won on there. So much cheaper than buying new.

Ah, we do the cornstarch thing, too! Except we call it "magic dust," and she thinks it helps keeps away monsters.

In France,ypu're considered a freak if you don't gro-bags until your child is at least 3 years old!
I never knew what they were until I had ds, but must admit that I'm a convert.
I recently got 2 in a jumble sale for 3 euros each - mega bargain!
They're also really handy for overnight stays in other people's houses. I'm going to use them as long as poss.

I used to love to sleep in my sleeping bag when I was a kid. Sort of like a giant grobag.

what's cornstarch? what does it do?

Sorry, cornstarch is cornflour! (I approached it from the other way --- "What is cornflour?") It keeps dd from getting too sweaty and helps with heat rash.

NDP, did your DD love her duvet? I'm anticipating that we're going to make the transfer to that soon, and wonder how we'll do.

DD is 2 1/2 and still in grobags. I had to buy new 2.5 tog ones a few months ago, but luckily the lightweight one from last Summer is just about ok. She's still in a cot so I don't want to start buying duvets etc. until she is in a proper bed.

maomao - yes, she really did. So much so that she used to demand to snuggle with it on the sofa in the post-bath pre-bed half hour . We took her to choose it for herself, she chose a really bright one with zoo animals on, lucky really as it went with the decor in her room !

I also think that it made the transition into a big bed much easier, as she was already perfectly fine with duvets.

DD just came out of her grobag last month at the age of 4yrs 2mths!!!!! She (and I) have loved her grobags, and she has always been a fantastic sleeper, mainly thanks to them I think. The 0.5tog summer ones are excellent and well worth investing in. If you get a larger size than you need, you can always use the press studs at the bottom to shorten it and then it will last for at least a couple of summers.

If you look on the official grobag website, there is a list of stockists, Our local stockist is cheaper than buying them direct (not sure how they manage that!). Well worth every penny IMO!
