My son might not need sleep but i do!

I have a 4 1/2 year old son and we have had every thing with sleep going. He dropped all of his daytime naps by 7 months, he had such severe night terrors between 18months and 3 years that he was investigated for sleep epilepsy. He regularly refuses to go to bed, is often awake multiple times in the night or for a long stretch in the night and starts the day early.

Whilst it appears that he might not need the sleep I do and the lack of sleep endured over the last 4 1/2 years has completely destroyed my health and my relationship. Whilst He visits his father fortnightly so i can have some rest bite 2 nights sleep uuninterrupted is not really denting the deficit.

We also have had behavioral problems which I suspect both are part of the sleep problem and caused by the sleep problem. But the medical profession have been rather unhelpful saying it will improve when he starts school. they said that about nursery and we had no improvement then. So we are running out of ideas.

have you asked aboout sleep medication? My friends 2year old was not sleeping AT ALL, and they prescribed it in greater and greater doses until it worked.

Admit he doesnt have anyother problems but he now sleeps great - minus the meds

Unfortunatly he reaction hyperactively to a LOT of normal over the counter meds and we were advised at an early stage that on of the known side affects of the sleep meds is that can make them hyperactive and that it was almost garanteed that this is how ds would react and therefore ensure less sleep achieve.

Poor kid can't even eat grapes, strawberries or oranges because of hyperactivity. ex learnt this the hard way recently.

Some one just suggest melatonine on another thread. Anyone got any views pro or con?
