9-year old can't get to sleep

My 9-year old daughter is having trouble sleeping, can't get to sleep till 1am for example, or nods off and then wakes again unable to get back off. As far as we know she isn't worrying about anything and just says her brain won't stop thinking about things. Anyone any ideas, could it be hormonal? Can anyone suggest relaxation tapes that may work. We've tried lavender oil and warm milk to no avail, and ruled out the stimulants in the diet theory.

My dd went through a spell of this when she was around 7 - she found it particularly hard to fall asleep.

We bought a radio/cd player and let her listen to 'quiet' stories or even Classic FM which helped. Also a warm bath with plenty of wind down time.

She did then get into a habit of not being able to fall without asleep with the music etc but now is able to fall asleep by herself (she's 8 now).

Is your dd very tired in the morning?
