Unbelievably wriggly, active 9 month old - how do i wind him down to sleep?!!

Has been kind of working ok so far. I feed him in the dark at 6pm-ish and he falls asleep, then wakes up a few times, feeds or sshes back to sleep (or if ill, needs a quick rock/sway) and wakes for the day at 5.15ish (eek)

BUT

recently he won't fall asleep on the boob (which in the back of my head I vaguely think means he isn't actually well - teething/cold whatever) and writhes around on me. So I rock him a bit, but he keeps grabbing my boobs. But then doesn't really want. Is obviously lighter too so he is looking around. Tried to lie him down and get him to settle but he just flips over/stands up/crawls off/grabs me. Have tried leaving him in cot but he then either plays happily for a while or gets miserable. Not sure how he would work out to lie down and go to sleep . Cannot for the life of me remember what I did with dd... but dh has just come downstairs after rocking him to sleep...

Can anyone help? Am a hippy, co-sleeping mum, he is fine once he has gone off to sleep but it's just winding him down? Put him in the sling? Am sure there is something v obvious I am missing...

Thanks!

what are his daytime naps like? perhaps hje's ready to drop one and he just isn't quite tired enough at 6 now?
or maybe just try movign the bedtime back half an hour?
does he settle ok with dh?

Could be right about naps, we tried at 7ish tonight because he slept around 2pm for an hour. And I don't know if he was quite tired enough still...

He settled fine (after having boob. Not from dh ). Think we might switch it, so I put dd to bed and he can settle ds...

More suggestions welcome - am trying to work out our new plan (oh god, that brings me back to dd, endless 'plans' )

lol are you like me though, I make my clever plans and then somehow never seem to quite manage to stick to them for more than oooh, a night or 2 lol

Oh yes, life just seems to get in the way. I will make a grand plan then forget that we have dd's birthday party on monday so it'll all go crazy then... oh, and then, ds will prob get a cold, or a tooth coming up or something, so it'll all go completely tits up
