Tips on how to get my newborn to sleep in his Moses basket

DS only a week old will not sleep in his moses basket - end up in bed with me. My DD loved her moses basket so I'm not sure how to deal with this. I'm not that keen on co-sleeping, as the double bed has no wall next to it and we can't move it so I'm worried he will roll off. Also during the day I want him to be safe not left on the bed while I play with DD.

Any tips on how to get him to sleep in the Moses basket?

could you put the moses basket in the bed with you?

Not sure this works but worth a try. Wear a t-shirt all day then put it on over the sheet just before he goes in. He wants to be next to you! DS was exactly the same. He got used to it eventually. Good luck

Yes, the "smelly thing" worked for us too. I tucked a muslin undermy T-shirt then put then in ds's basket and he seemed to settle better. Have you tried swaddling too?

poshtottie · 21/03/2009 11:05

Oh yes forgot about the swaddling.

MrsMattie · 21/03/2009 11:07

Swaddle, definitely. Then feed/cuddle/rock to sleep and put him down. We bought the moses into our bed for a bit, too - put it between us so I could stroke DD's forehead and 'shhhhh' right into her ear. Only did it for a couple of nights and it seemed to have the desired effect.

Do you like co-sleeping? If so, you could just go with it? I hated it, as I sleep very heavily and was afraid I'd squash DD/DS, but plenty of people do it, and you can find guidelines online to how to do it safely.

My dd3 hated the moses basket. She would sleep in the carry cot though - or with us.

So far he has hated being swaddled but he has found his thumb so will try to swaddle with arms out. Will try the muslin. I worried about squashing too although I don't move much while I sleep.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh cuddle him

My DS hated his moses basket, and we did continue to try for a few weeks,
but i used to end up bring him in with me as the only place he would sleep was on my chest,

swaddling did not work for us as he hated this even more than his moses basket and could wriggle free within minutes.

but then tried him in his cot and he settled and slept so much better straight away

they all have their strange little preferences

We had this....

DD hated being swaddled so that was out.
other things to try:

  • Smelly tshirt - I put mine over the mattress

  • Elevate the head end of the mattress slightly- She would happily sleep in her bouncer so maybe she didnt like being flat.

  • Make a nest with rolled up blankets round the outside. DD felt too lost in the big basket and this helped her feel more secure. She would stretch her arms and legs out and freak out!
Id say this was the biggest success!

I have got him into his moses basket now doesn't seem to sleep as long but that may be just be his age rather than where he sleeps. I did try the muslin in the cot smelling of me and it did seem to help at first.
