Anyone cracked 5am starts?

DD 20 months wakes at 5am for the day. No use trying to give milk and put back down she's just ready for the day. Trouble is she's ready for her nap by 10-10.30am which means any morning activities are scuppered. Has 1-2 hours sleep in the morning but if she has less she still wakes early the next day. Haven't tried this consistently though I must admit. Friends babies sleep til 7.30-8am. Am I doing something wrong or is she just always going to be an early riser?

I agree with Sophy. My dd (1 yr old) naps at 12ish til about 2ish then goes down from 7.30pm to 7.30am. This has only been a very recent thing (she was getting up at 6ish) but she seems to be getting the hang of it now!

Managed to keep her up til 12pm for the last couple of days, then set my alarm for 6am and left her til then. Both days she has woken at 5m as usual and cried but I've shut the door and ignored her and only gone in at 6am. Both time she has been awake but lying there quietly! Result! Will maybe start lengthening it til 6.15 then 6.30 and see if she goes back to sleep. Either way if she learns to lie quietly for an hour and just wait, then I am pleased. 6am is just so much more reasonable than 5. Thanks everyone for advice

Hi just a quick post - my DS is 22mths and has been doing the horrid 5.30am waking, we seem to have cracked it by giving him more sleep - In this I know he is unusual - he would still have 2 day time naps given half a chance, he goes to bed half an hour earlier in the evenings now.

2 lady's further down were talking about clocks what we have done is bought a rabbit alarm clock when the alarm is set at night the rabbit goes to sleep - when the alarm goes off (silent of course) the rabbit wakes up. We've told him that he can have breakfast as soon as the rabbit is awake. We started it off down stairs so when he was up we'd go down and if the rabbit was awake he could have breky if it wasn't he'd have to play for a bit until it was. Then this weekend we took the clock up into his room so that now he stays in bed until the rabbit is awake - first thing he did this morning when we went in was ask if rabbit was awake don't believe we have cracked it yet but it was a great start.
Good luck all
H x

not sure what happened this morning - went from 5am to 5.40am! do u think the dream feed at 10pm might have helped???? do i go back to dream feeds again??? dd is 9 months old!

tew · 26/04/2005 12:10

My dd is 8 months old and has always been a great sleeper. But last few nights, been waking at 2.30 hysterical for a bottle (which she hasn't done since 10 weeks old!) Possibly as she had her first cold at the w/e? She then goes straight down again, but manages to fill her nappy terribly which wakes her up again at 6am. Know she's still tired.

Not sure what's causing this, any suggestions re nappy filling? As I'm 15 weeks pregnant and working part time, finding this a little tiresome! Made dh change nappy this morning to give him a shock!!

The only thing that worked for us was COMPLETE black out in the room. Black out blind, linings - but then the linings nailed to the side of the window, hardboard strip nailed across the top to stop the chink that comes above the blind, as well! Then we got a nightlight and set it to come on at 6.30 and told ds not to get out of bed until the light came on - took a few mornings of putting him back to bed, but finally we seem to have cracked it thank goodness.

jessicasmummy · 27/04/2005 07:16

not sure whats happening with jess - someone give me some answers!

she went down last night at 5.45pm - back to the normal time after a week of 8pm! I dream fed her at 10pm but she would only take 3oz, she then woke for the remainding 6oz at 12 midnight, woke at 2.30am for 7oz and again at 4.30am for another 4oz. That was her til 6.45am this morning!
She has been refusing to eat her tea recently, so i know thats why she is wanting the bottles through the night - any ideas guys on what i can do?! Although I like the fact she isnt waking til 6.45 - she is taking far too much milk at night!

littlerach · 27/04/2005 08:52

Stop giving her the milk!!!!!!!!!!!!
How are you by the way, haven't "seen" you for ages!!
Such a viscous circle, getting themto nap and sleep at night in the right order! Nearly had E in a routine this week - waking at 6am (yay!) then hrs sleep at 9am then another hr at 2pm, then bed at 6.30opm, lasted 4 days then preschool run ruined it! Nevermind, at least I know she can do it, just means that she naps in the car a bit, then goes to bed!

angelp · 27/04/2005 12:12

I would think that bed at 5.45pm is a bit early - also agree on not feeding her during the night. She is too full on milk to bother eating during the dayso its a viscious circle. My DD has always been a pain over eating so I have cut her morning milk by hlaf and it seems to work a bit. Just give her water in the night, first night may be hard but soon enough she won't bother waking for water and will be so hungry by morning she'll scoff her brekkie down! How's the pregnancy by the way? You must be exhausted if you are having such broken nights

well i think the other night was a one off! she went down REALLY early last night, so i got her up in the evening for about an hour and a half, she only had her 10pm dream feed and woke for her dummy at 1am and then at 5am again, didnt wake me up til 6!!! hoorah! Ate all her brekkie and a yoghurt this morning - i fed her at 4pm last night and again at 8pm with solids so think this may have helped! I keep giving milk in the night because she wont take much during the day!
Hope you're ok little rach - im good - settling in up here now! Staying with dad for a while as DH away again!
Pregnancy is going well - dont even know im pregnant half the time! Just a little more tired than anything! Roll on tomorrow and DH is home for the long weekend to take over for a while so i can get some sleep!!! Jess is asleep again now and will be for about an hour!

angelp · 28/04/2005 19:37

We have put black out linings over the top of the balck out blinds so there is not a chink of light anywhere - and still 5am!! Think it could be the birds? Really getting me more and more exhausted every day even though I don't go in to her til 6am. Am always awake from when she is though
