Baby up for hours in the night

Hi. Hoping for some words of wisdom. I have an 11 month baby who consistently is awake at 2-3am and won't go back to sleep until around 5am. Help!

I recently tried controlled crying which was effective, however I stopped this when baby became sick with ear infection. Now it seems he is less responsive to controlled crying (I think he realises I will cave in if he cries long/hard enough!).Worst of all he is now standing up in his cot if I leave him to settle himself. Last night he fell over in his cot and banged his head. Have even tried taking him into the guest bedroom but he just wants to crawl all over the place and ends up in a physical battle.

Historically I have always had to be with him in the room for him to go to sleep. After several failed attempts at gradual retreat, we tried controlled crying. He does sometimes feed to sleep, but most of the time settles himself from being awake.
Any ideas on what to do? Particularly how did other people cope with babies standing up when you leave the room?

I think at that time of night you need to go in with minimum noise / fuss. Lie him down and either say nothing, or just shush, back to sleep. Repeat, repeat, repeat. With cc if necessary.
You will have a horrible few nights but he will quickly learn it's not worth the effort to complain.

My 9 month old is doing exactly this and no idea what to do either. Is very very frustrating as you don't want to leave them in case they fall and hit their head. Moved him into his own room today so wondering if that will help - can't really make it much worse!

Is he having too much daytime sleep? Might be a reason why is he waking during the night?

PaulaatMummyKnowsBest · 02/01/2009 18:53

does he have a routine at all?

What do you do when he wakes up?

SleeplessinSwansea · 06/01/2009 20:36

Just to let you know, has started sleeping through again (phew, he must have read my last post about being thrown out the window!!) No idea what that temporary blip was about.

Dear pudding25...daytime sleep is very short, just 2 30-40 min naps usually. He has a fairly regular routine and his bed time routine is military in precision.
