Sorry, another 'what to wear when cold' question.

Dd is 16 weeks old. She is in a vest, sleepsuit, pj top and 2.5 tog grobag. It is currently 16 degrees in her room. This morning it was 14.

Dp has just put a blanket over her which I have taken off again (Have seen the thread about blankets but dont want to use one)

What do you do when it gets colder? She wakes a few times a night and Im sure its because she is cold. Its only October, our house is freezing and we only have crappy gas heaters that cost loads to run.

We have a 15 tog duvet on us when its really cold but you cant get more then a 2.5 tog sleeping bag? I have fleecy sleepsuits but worry about her overheating.

Any tips would be great. Thanks x

unbuttoned cardigan over the top (or button up and leave off pj top)
it's the arms that get chilly sticking out a grobag

tbh at 16wks it could be anything waking her up - if the back of her neck (or the top of her chest, whcihever is easier to feel) is the same temp as your own cleavage she is fine

consider swapping the cotton sleepsuit for a fleece one when it gets colder

could you get a heater just for her room? we have an oil filled radiator from argos, so can heat just that room, not the whole house. to a nice temperature. DD hates the cold, and i can't sleep with it too hot

We used a little 450watt electric heater with a plug in thermostat set to 18 degrees so the heater came on when needed to keep the room at 18 degrees. At the time we bought it the heater was supposed to cost 1p an hour but I think it would be 4.5p now.

I've just been to homebase to get a heater for his room. It dropped to 12 last night.

we have it on thermostat, too - i think it's quite economical as it warms up quickly and holds heat for a long time. in any case, much cheaper than heating the whole house. DD likes it properly toasty

i have tried putting more layers on her etc. but since we've had this heater on, she sleeps much better

I must be hideously out of touch but are blankets banned for babies now? I used a sheet and cellular blankets for my two (pre-grobags) and put them at the bottom of the cot so they can't wriggle under.

I spoke to my Dad about it earlier as I want to get an oil filled heater that has a thermostat on so that the room stays at a constant temperature. He thinks that keeping our gas heater on low will be as cheap as an electric one. Surely gas is more expensive??

Dd kicks everytime blankets are put on her! She tries the same with her grobag but gives up as she gets no where!

you can get pretty efficient ones these days - not sure of the exact to the penny running costs v central heating, but i think the big adantage is that you have a heater with a thermostat for just the one room. our central heating thermostat is downstairs, so it kicking in when DD's room upstairs gets cold is not very reliable
