please can someone explain to a new member the lingo DD,DS etc. Am i being utterly dumb??

Check out the acronym list at the top of the page - just along from 'useful stuff'.

Under "Useful stuff" there is a link to an Acronym List.

If you look under Find Discussions there is a Topic List where you can work out the most appropriate topic in which to start a thread.
