when you move your toddler to a big bed they'll constantly be jumping out and wandering into your bedroom

Ds will not move from his bed unless we go to him. As he is in the loft conversion and we are on the 1st floor we just don't hear him. It's also a bit annoying having to go up to him just to come straight back down with him again.

So how do we train him to get out of bed on his own and come and find us?

He will eventually (well you knew that anyway as I am sure you did not envisage collecting your teenager from his bed!) How long has he been in his bed? Was he trying to climb out of his cot before? If not, it is not surprising that he hasn't yet worked out that he can leave the bed by himself.

He's been in the bed about 2 months now and before that he was in his cot without the side on it for about two months. He never tried to climb out of his cot!

I can't remember how long it took my kids to work out they could leave the bed themselves. Ds1 used to climb out of the cot so I reckon he knew straightaway and ds2 had ds1 in the room with him so ditto. I think dd was the one who took her time to work it out, but it came eventually. Can you try shouting to him in an encouraging way or are we talking about very early in the morning before the house is properly awake?

We could try shouting, yes - might annoy the neighbours, but hey! I've been trying going upstairs and standing at his door and saying "come downstairs for a cuddle"

get a two way baby alarm and then tell him to come down?
practice it as a game first??

that's what we're currently doing, popsy. But we want to stop that before baby comes!

oh, and even though we did it as a game first, he still just sits in bed chatting to the two way monitor. When we eventually give in and go up to his room he tells me that he's been talking to mummy. And he often picks it up and turns it off (thinking that it is how to use it!)

She's been in her bed for 18 months and we're still hoping!

Dd never came out of her bed when she wanted us, just yelled down until we heard her, until ds was born. We told her she couldn't yell anymore as she may wake him up. She was 5.5 when he was born

Tonight we have had to keep putting her back into her bed. We are in a bungalow (although we're about to convert our loft too), so the living room is on the same floor as her bedroom, I think curiosity is now going to get the better of her!!

my ds1 (age4) will NEVER get out of bed unless we go into him, he never has, even when we first took the sides off his old cot.
ds2 however (22mths) totally different, we took the sides down on his cot and he was wandering round upstairs!

Our problem is totally opposite. DD won't stay in her bed at all! She gets up the minute our back is turned. Eventually she falls asleepin bed but when she wakes in the night she gets straight out and then cries when she gets stuck at the stair gate, whereas when she was in her cot we didn't hear a peep all night. Wish we could put her back......

I once read a tip about putting a timer on a lamp and this couple explained to their daughter that she could get out of bed when the lamp came on.

They did it because she was getting up so early so they changed the timer to come on 15 mins later every 2 days.

It could work depending how old he is and if he understands.
