When do they have naps and how many do they need a day - how long can they go in between naps without getting cranky?

DD is 11 1/2 months old. She can stay awake for 3 hours before she gets cranky, but struggles quite a bit to get to sleep so there's often 3 1/2 hrs between sleeps. This is what our day looks like:

7.30 get up
11am nap for 1 hr
3.30 nap for 1 hr
7.30 bedtime

And I'm not even talking about what happens after that! Let's just say she's not quite sleeping through yet!

beckmo · 16/07/2008 12:53

Charchargabor's nap routine is the same as how my 11 month old was-she's now 13 months though and in the past 2 months has dropped the morning one (this was erratic for a good few weeks) and now just has 1-2 hours after lunch at 12.30.

foxymolly · 16/07/2008 12:56

DD is almost 9 months and her rountine is:

8.00 - get up
10.30 - nap for 1.30hr
3.00 - nap for 1 hr
7.00 - bed.

mooki · 17/07/2008 11:49

DD is nearly 11 months and generally goes:

7am wake up
10 ish - nap for 1 hr
2 ish - nap for 30-45 mins
7.45 ish - asleep for the night (one wake up around 5am)

putting her down for sleeps has got so much easier now I have stopped assuming she should be tired after 2 hours. And woe betide me at bedtime if she is asleep after about 4pm in the afternoon.

Dd had two at this age one in the morning and one later in the afternoon. She is now 14 months and prefers 1.5 - 2 hours in the middle of the day. She is sleeping about 12 hours at night now too (this is only recent though)

lou031205 · 17/07/2008 21:40

Well, have had huge issues with sleep, but in the last two weeks we seem to have settled on:

Wake 6am [vomit emoticon]
Nap 10am (takes up to 30 mins to settle) 1 hour
Nap 12-1pm (takes up to 30 mins to settle) 1-2 hours
Bed 7pm (takes up to 1 hour to settle) sleeps through night.

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 18/07/2008 20:39

Wow, I feel dead chuffed. It's a rare occasion I can describe myself as fortunate when it comes to DS and sleep!

he's actually nearer 12 months but his routine is sort of:

5-6am wakes up
8ish back to bed for 1.25 hours
1-2ish another 1.25 hours, sometimes 2.5!
7ish bedtime

Also between 2 and 1,000,000 wakeups at night

And no, he doesn't sleep any better with less daytime sleep - the opposite in fact!

alittleteapot · 18/07/2008 20:53

DD is 12 months now but for the last month or so has seemed to be in the process of dropping her morning nap.

She now seems to do without it for three days and then need it on the fourth. On days she does without she wakes 7.30ish and can manage till 12 or 1 then will sleep for up to 2 hours. Then she'll have a day where she's whacked by 10.30 or 11 - will sleep for 45 mins to an hour and same again at about 3. On those days it's difficult to get her to bed early though as she seems to be able to manage a good 4 or 5 hours awake in the afternoon.

She's also a bad night sleeper but that's another story!

NumptyMum · 20/07/2008 16:18

DS has had odd naps the last couple of days - waking at 6.30, then tired at 9.30, slept for 2 hours (! & had to wake him!) then no more naps until going to bed at 7.30/8pm.

Normally it's 2 naps, 1hr around 9.30/10am and 1.5hrs around 2.30/3pm.

I think it could be because he's teething...

meep · 20/07/2008 16:21

dd just 1yo.

Wakes up at 7am

Naps at 9am for between 1 to 3 hours!!

Naps again at around 2pm for about 1 to 2 hours

Bed at 7pm

To be fair she doesn't like to sleep at nursery and can go all day on just 30mins napping time!

NumptyMum · 20/07/2008 16:31

Interesting to hear about your DD's experience at nursery, Meep - DS is due to start at nursery in 3 weeks (for 2.5 days pw) and I've been bit worried about how (or if) he'll nap...

meep · 20/07/2008 16:50

it used to stress me out - now I just go with it! It is almost a standing joke when I pick her up from nursery! But they have managed to get her to sleep for up to an hour - sometimes even twice a day !

Nurseries find a way to get them to sleep. At home dd sleeps in her cot. At nursery she screams in the cot but will sleep in a baby swing chair! I don't actually care where she sleeps at nursery as long as she gets some shut eye!

But it doesn't seem to trouble her. She is just a bit frenetic when she gets home and desperate for her bed. At first it resulted in more night wakings (just little shouts of tiredness) but even that has calmed down.

Your ds will find his way!

NumptyMum · 20/07/2008 21:13

Hey Meep, thanks for the reassurance! (sorry for taking so long to reply, went out/got supper/DS to bed etc...) I figured nursery would find own way but have been a bit stressed as apart from sleeping in pram, often I'm bf-ing DS to sleep for naps as he just doesn't wind down otherwise - so I've also to get him into using a cup for milk instead. Thank goodness it's only for 2.5 days per week!

onepieceoflollipop · 20/07/2008 21:17

dd2 is 11 months. She sleeps at night from 6.45pm til whenever she feels like (!) - usually up asking for b/f between 5.30-6.30am on average.

Has a sleep after breakfast, 9ish for 30-60 minutes.

Has a sleep after lunch 1pm ish. Varies from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

At nursery she follows a similar pattern.

If she has had a day of no naps/disturbed naps she usually naps well the next day.

dd1 was a much better sleep [wistful emoticon]

onepieceoflollipop · 20/07/2008 21:18

p.s. she is a very cheerful and laid back baby, so doesn't tend to get cranky when tired. If she is busy playing etc or we are out she might just wait for her sleep until her eyes are drooping!

violetsmile · 23/07/2008 19:49

DS is 11 and half months. Wakes at 5:30am

Naps 8am for an hour- an hour and half.

2:30 nap for another hour

7pm bedtime, used to sleep through til 7 now up a few times for cuddles then wakes up between 5 and half past.

MrsBumblebee · 23/07/2008 21:35

DS is 10 months. Used to be a nightmare at daytime sleep but suddenly got better when he became mobile. We are now on:

Wakes between 5.30 and 6.30 (yuk yuk yuk)

9/9.30am - 10am - nap for 30 mins to 1 hr, depending on how early he woke up; always wake him at 10am

12.30/1pm - 2.30pm - nap for 1-2 hours, depending on how tired he is; always wake him at 2.30pm

Bed at 7.15pm, usu asleep by 7.30pm. On the plus side, almost never wakes in the night.
