22month DS won't go to sleep without screaming and getting mad. Any ideas anyone?

My DS 22 months and DD 3.5 years share a room.
My DD shared our bed for 6 months when born but then moved into cot and we did rapid response and leaving the room slowly and then managed to get her to fall asleep on her own and stay asleep by about 18 months. Bit longer than imagined but suceeded.
Now DS we have been putting him in his own bed for about 12 months. Took the side off and he went back to sleep quicker, gave him a pillow and things improved. Now he'll sleep through the night about 5/7 week. But to go to sleep he screams and creates havoc. If we're in the room he lies on his bed and pretends to sleep only if we move he screams out. As this wasn't helping and he wasn't going to sleep we changed to rapid response but this didn't work as soon as we left the room he cried out. (luckily DD sleeps through it all - don't know how)

Now when we leave the room he runs to the door and hammers on it and screams. If we go in he goes back to bed, we leave room and he then gets out. This can go on for between half an hour to 1.5 hours. Until he's tired himself out so much he can't stay awake.

Has anyone any ideas or pointers or should I just keep putting him back and eventually he'll get the idea?

Thanks
