5 month old sleep

My DS was an amazing sleeper as a new born and up until 4 months. As soon as he hit 4 months the regression came and we went from 1-2 wake ups a night to every hour to two hours. He’s breastfed and has a bottle as his last feed before bed. He’s now just over 5 months and I feel like the wakeups have gotten less but we’re still in the thick of it.
exactly 2 hours after bedtime he wakes and is inconsolable, not hungry as can be settled without feeding but it’s an awful scream. The same happens at around 2/3am but then once the crying stops it’s wide awake happy and babbling! He can be settled without feeding for most of the night and easily go 5 hours without a feed even if he wakes every hour or so. He can self settle as does for naps during the day etc, we’ve tried later bedtime, stretching wake windows and everything in between I’m a total loss of what to do! Any advice welcome, we never had this with our first

Why are you not feeding? That doesn't make sense as it is the thing most likely to help them sleep more.

Also not understanding why you aren't just boobing him back to sleep. You feed as soon as they snuffle around, they don't wake fully or scream, everyone gets more sleep. If you wait until he's yelling then yes, he's going to be wide awake.

mainly because I’m stopping BF in the next few weeks, my worry was if he uses it for comfort to get to sleep now then I’m taking that away from him is that going to cause even more upset for him.
