my ds is 26 months old and has deicided he no longer wishes to sleep in his cot - I thought he was a little young to go in a single bed as i am terrified he will fall out and hurt himself - any suggestion on this or does a bed guard work well at this age?

dd went into a bed at 22 months. It was a high single guest bed thing that had a spare pull out bed underneath (we used to pull it out a bit so she could use it to get up on the bed!). We used a bed guard and that did the job well (it was a tomy fold down one)

DS went into a big boy's bed at 22 months
DD got her big bed as her 2nd birthday present.
Both had a bed guard, which I gradually moved further toward the foot of the bed until they no longer needed it aged about 3.

put dd1 in bed at 16 months(prob too early but needed cot for dd2) had one of those tiny things from ikea that grow with child. You can put top and bottom up to make u-shapey thing. We didnt use a bed guard and she was fine. did put old duvets on floor though just in case.

I have never had climbers etc.so I havent needed to put my DC's into a bed early.

DS was late-ish at 2.7 yrs,DD1 was 2.5 yrs,we used a Bed Guard each time, and it was almost like they were in a cot, they never got out, until they were potty trained at night.

DD2 I think will be different as she's a wanderer,so I might keep her in Cot as long as possible.

A friend of mine used the cot mattress and layed it down on floor in case her DS fell out.

Some LO's like the "freedom" they have and will wander around upstairs,so you might need a stair gate on their room,or if not that then a stair gate on the stairs,if you havent already, and keep other doors shut in case they want to "play" in the bathroom,or your bedroom.

ds1 went into a single bed at 20 months, we didn't need to

Ds1 went into a bed at 18 months (was climbing out of his cot and cot was needed for ds2).

Didn't bother with a bed guard.

DS2 18mnths as we have just moved house and him and DS1 have big boy beds.
DS1 was climbing out of his cot at 10mnths!!

Dd went into a single bed at about 20 months. Didn't bother with a bed guard. She's fallen out a couple of times - landed on a pile of teddies, no damage done. She loves her big girl's bed.

My son went in a single bed at 18mths he didnt like being in his cot. I was moving house at the time & bought him a single bed to see if he would settle in it, luckily he did.Didn't bother with safety guard but I always put cushions on the floor so if he fell he couldn't hurt himself. We've never looked back!

Kewcumber · 18/06/2008 13:53

Ds went into singel bed about 2.4 has fallen out a few times. I was stressed by the idea of him falling out but once he'd done it a couple of times realsied that he settles down again very quickly. Put a chair back against his bed (chepaer than a rail)

DartmoorMama · 18/06/2008 13:54

our dd went from co-sleeping to ordinary single at about 18months.

DS went in it at 19 months as I caught him in the act of climbing out of his cot. (he is actually in a toddler bed which he adores) he has never fallen out of bed and slept through the night from day 1!
