Going to sleep used to be great but since teething has gone wrong...

Ds used to be so good at going to sleep (not staying asleep though!) we would put him in his cot and that was that. He has just had a really bad few weeks with teething and four teeth came through together. SInce then going to bed has become a battle, as soon as we leave the room he sits or stands in his cot and cries so hard. This goes on and on, with me going in and him settling then me leaving and straight back to screaming. I have got into the routine of patting his back until he sleeps, which I know is a bad habit to get into, but don't know what else to do. Any advice?

kitty - i don't have much useful to say but my ds was a GREAT sleeper til about 9 months when he gots lots of teeth all at the same time and he has not been a good sleeper since! In retrospect think that probably we rushed in with attention too soon feeling all sorry for him when he wasn't teething and he got used to it..
but anyway i usually have to do a bit of back patting to get him off the sleep just recently (he is 19 mo now), but i think - as with verything - its just a phase!! Not the end of the world..don't feel too bad for the back patting. Sympathies though!
