10 month old whimpering and crying all night

My 10 month olds sleep has gone to absolute shit the last few weeks and I have no idea what to do.

He whimpers and thrashes about all night, working himself up to full on crying at least twice, usually more. If I pick him up its a 50/50 chance of him pulling away from me wanting to be put down, but if I do put him down he screams more.

When he does let me hold him he usually settles within 10 minutes, but if I put him down before he's fully dead weight and flat out (minimum half an hour) the screaming starts again. Often takes me 2 hours to get him to be asleep not on me, so he's keeping me awake for hours in the night. Even when he's in his cot he's so unsettled neither of us are getting any proper sleep.

He's definitely teething but had nothing like this with previous teeth. If you've read this far and can offer any advice that would be amazing x

I was going to suggest teething or ear infection. I'd get him looked at by a GP in case it could be ears.

He might also be having a developmental spurt, that can unsettle them - is he doing anything new? Or has he had any change to routine?

@verycloakanddaggers No routine change and no new skills. I hadn't thought of ear infection, I'll definitely look into it thank you! X
