Is it normal that DD (10m) cries herself to sleep every night?

We have only recently started putting her down awake (rather than feeding to sleep) in an effort to stop frequent night wakings. It is mostly successful, but it breaks our hearts that she cries herself to sleep each night, and also if we put her down for a nap in the day (rare - usually she feeds to sleep, falls asleep on one of us or out in the pushchair/car).

Is this normal? We have only been doing it a week or two, will it get better? How can we get her more used to it?

How long does she cry for? Is it full on crying or fussing/wimpering?

It's fairly loud but then dies down. Up to 5 minutes or so. I just feel a bit bad for her, it's not a great way to go to sleep is it?

Do you stay with her?

K999 · 02/05/2008 20:51

How long have you been doing this? You may find that after another few nights she will go down without crying as she will have got used to being put down to sleep. 5 mins is not too long but if you feel bad, go in, settle her and come out again........and then repeat the process...

No we don't stay with her, she goes down on her own, but always with a cry. It's been about 2 weeks.

Well she's been used to being fed to sleep, to then suddently go to just being put down awake alone it's not really that surprising that she gets upset IMO.

I would try staying with her.

Try putting her down...go in after a few mins, settle her and then leave....keep repeating until she sleeps.....it is CC and some dont like it but I did it with dd2 and have never looked back....
