4 year old sleep is driving me mad

Hi my DS is 4 and a half and for the past couple of months his sleep is just terrible, he wakes up most days between 5 and half 5, he's shattered for most of the day which means he's whiny and grumpy, the tantrums are horrific. We decided for a few days to put him down early to see if he would catch up on sleep so we aimed to get him in bed for 6.30, the first night was great he slept through to about 6.30 the next day...fantastic! Then the next night we tried the same thing and he mucked about in bed until nearly 8pm then he woke again at 5.30 in the morning, he can be a very restless sleeper and never seems to be well rested, I've tried leaving his bed time until later but he gets up even earlier. I'm at my wits end I'm just fed up with the grumpiness during the day. Not sure if I should speak to a doctor but don't know really what they could do. Any tips or help would be appreciated

Get him a gro clock and he's not allowed out of bed before he's on.

Audio books to listen to until 7.30.

Bore him back to sleep

Try introducing a gro clock if you haven't already. Start off with wake up not too long after he'd normally wake and gradually move it forward.

This helped our son around that age but ultimately the best thing to happen to his sleep pattern was starting school. An easy 7 till 7 most nights now.

Thanks for the advice guys, will look to get a gro clock, it's just frustrating that he always seems tired I'm like just sleep!!! I know that would solve most of his issues during the day with tantrums etc
