Is this a normal amount of sleep?

Hi everyone,

First of all - please do not read if you are sleep deprived 😣 this isn't meant to be bragging or to rub anyone up the wrong way

My baby is 11 weeks and has always slept well but for the past week or two has been sleeping through the night.

He just slept almost 12 hours! When I had my first I thought babies like this were made up.

But anyway I just want to know if others babies are similar as it's so strange to me after what my first was like, I'm actually starting to worry there is something wrong with the amount he's sleeping

In the day he naps quite well/goes down easily but will have good periods where he is awake and alert

Yes. Not unusual.

SaltyGod · 15/07/2024 07:04

Yes, that’s normal.

Mine slept through from 8/9 weeks, a solid 11 hours.

PeopleAreToads · 15/07/2024 07:04

Not unusual at that age, DD did that but then thanks to the 4 month sleep regression was waking up 10 times a night not long after. I found around 3-4 months the easiest time for sleep, so I wouldn’t assume you’ve got a great sleeper yet. Though some babies come through the sleep regression quickly so you may be lucky

@PeopleAreToads thanks for the positivity 🤨

Mine slept 11 hours from 2 week old plus long naps. I was worried but the health visitor just said not all babies are bad sleepers, enjoy.

I've had 3 good sleepers, first slept 10-8am at 11 weeks, second 10 weeks and third 9 weeks. Third is still only 14 weeks so not sure if this will last but the other 2 have slept all their lives, now 16 and 3 - we just like sleep I guess!

Neither are good eaters, eldest has ASD and I'm fairly sure middle one will be diagnosed with something once she gets to school so overall they aren't easy children but at least they sleep!

Third one is a good napper too, I spoke to the HV about whether he sleeps too much but the "normal" range is so broad so she says it's just him. He will go down for a 2.5 hour nap 2 hours after sleeping for 12 🤷‍♀️ he's a happy little soul though and only ever screams if he's not managed to have decent naps so think he's just a tired person!

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. I think it is a bit frowned upon to talk about babies who sleep well so often don't hear about the good sleepers, only the bad. So I started to worry a bit that it's such a long time for him to be sleeping without waking. Since posting I've been doing some googling and found other posts and babies like this really do exist.

Yes they do exist. Some keep sleeping through the night, others change again. 10 weeks is often the best sleep of the first year before development ramps up. Baby sleep isn’t linear it goes up and down for most babies, but I’ve known a few who do just keep sleeping through (neither of mine though 😂)

SallyWD · 15/07/2024 07:35

There's a lot of variation. Neither of mine slept through until 12 months. My friend's baby slept through from 8 weeks!
