Sleeping Bag/Gro Bag - GF recommended 0.5 tog

I have just recently bought my daughter (10 weeks old) a sleeping bag which she loves, but have since discovered that it is 2.5 tog and not the 0.5 tog that GF recommends. I am dressing her (at the moment because its cold) in long sleeved vest, grow, sleeping bag and sheet tucked over. Do you think it is OK to do this without the risk of overheating? GF says to use the 0.5 tog with blanket over top, do you think there is much difference? Do you think it is OK to use 2.5 tog bag on a 10 week old?
Any comments would be great.

All absolutely fine - shouldn't think she even needs the sheet really.

Have a look at grobag.com - they have loads of good, proven advice which should set your mind at rest.

I started using a 2.5 grobag at about 8 weeks and it's always been fine. I used to put my dd in a bodysuit/vest and a long sleeved romper suit plus the grobag.

I agree with Scatterbrain - check the temp in your baby's room and follow the advice on grobag.com. (they give specific advice re. number of layers etc.) Don't remember GF's advice re. this, (I must have missed it!), since I don't recall her saying there should be a sheet tucked over top, or that only 0.5 tog.

Thanks for the comments, will have a look at Grobag.com, sounds as though its all OK though. GF mentions 0.5 tog in an early section of the book, I'm currently on the 8-12 week routine where she recommends changing to sleeping bag but doesn't mention the tog again, so found it highly annoying when I had already bought the bag and happened to go back and read the 0.5 part!

I'd say the tog rating also depends on your baby, your house, the weather, where you live... my DSs are hot children, our house is warm and we live in the South of England. A cold child in a draughty farmhouse in the Outer Hebrides would need a higher togged sleeping bag than my boys!

I started using a 2.5 tog grobag with short-sleeved bodysuit and sleepsuit/PJs when ds was 7 weeks. In summer we used 1.0 tog (towelling) grobag except on very hot nights. I use the grobag nursery thermometers (which come with the grobags) to decide which grobag and what clothing to use.

I think grobag actually say that you shouldn't use any other bedding on top (I think it's on the label but I can't check because the grobags are stored in ds's nursery and at the moment he is asleep!).

If you're worried, just check your baby's temperature occasionally. You'll soon get an idea of how much clothing to use for your child.

Yep Soupdragon - thats us to a tee!
We have a 2.0 tog plus a blanket for ds, and a 8 tog duvet for dd (and we have a 13.5 goosedown for ourselves, but then it doesn't matter if WE overheat!!)
The Outer Hebs are marvellous, but on the chilly side!

also use 2.5 tog grobag DD is in long sleeved sleepsuit and bedroom temp 17 - 18 degrees. only problem is her little hands get freezing - have tried mits but she hates them - any one elses DD/DS have cold hands?

GeorginaA · 10/12/2002 08:40

My ds always seems to have cold hands. Improved a bit since I put a little electric radiator in his room to click in at night if it gets too cold, but to be honest he doesn't seem to mind either way! (Although Mummy minds when he wants his cuddle first thing and tries to put his icy fingers around her neck ... shudder)

SoupDragon · 10/12/2002 11:03

Oh yes GeorginaA! And the cold feet once they graduate to PJs... EEEK!

GeorginaA · 10/12/2002 11:28

You mean we can't keep them in grobags until they're teenagers and don't want cuddles anymore?!!! Damn
