DS 5 disturbed sleep/ bad dreams/ co-sleeping

I am hoping for some advice about my 5yo DS, he’s never been a great sleeper with regular phases of disturbed nights since he was about 2. For the past few months, he wakes most nights around 3-4am, either calling for us or just coming straight into our bed and spending the rest of the night with us.

The problem is that his bed “gives him bad dreams” and our bed gives him good dreams. He is fine to do bedtime in his bedroom and fall asleep in his bed, but he is not happy to return to his bed in the middle of the night once he’s woken up and come through to us. He had this issue with his old toddler bed, and earlier this year we upgraded it to a bunk. He’s slept up top, down below but nothing seems to work to make his bed acceptable.

I get that it isn’t the bed, but that he wants reassurance from us after waking in the night. We try and give him cuddles then return him to his bed, but honestly the hassle of being called back and forth across the house, only for him to end up back in our bed anyway is just not worth it. For my part I’m a fairly heavy sleeper and I don’t really mind him coming into our bed - it’s a superking and has plenty of space. The issue is DH is a very light sleeper and this is ruining him, especially on the nights when DS doesn’t go back to sleep quickly and rolls around for 1 hour plus.

If there is an easy way through this or any suggestions, I would really love to hear them!

I have a similar issue with my 4.5 year old. I was getting up multiple times in the night to comfort her so my OH swapped with her. She now co-sleeps with me and he sleeps in her bed (it’s an adult double). It works for us. She sleeps through the night now and I know it won’t be forever but she’s happy and settled and we all sleep.
