5 year old long wakes in night

Hi I have a 5 year old who quite frequently wakes up around 3am and hugely struggles to fall back to sleep. We start off trying different strategies but often times when I leave the room to go back to my bed he then gets up and puts his light on and starts trying to play. I prompt him back to bed as it's 4am and this can often result in him becoming angry and defiant because he's wide awake and wants to play.

Then I tend to start to get cross! Occasionally he falls back to sleep around 5ish.

This happens once or twice a week. It's hard and also I worry the impact it might have on his learning at school. Although he seems to be doing well.

I'm wondering if anyone else had a 5 year old like this and if there is any point seeing a health visitor or GP. He's got a solid bedtime routine, he gets plenty of fresh air and exercise. He seems to have an over active mind sometimes but not to the extent of ADHD I don't think.
