ds2 has always needed a fair amount of sleep and normally goes to sleep at night around 7.30 to be up early enough for school which is great..but..on occasions when he goes to bed late i.e babysitter keeps him up late or we go somewhere the next day he gets up at the usual time and having had much less sleep is so completely upset and impossible all the next day .
We are going to a panto on Thursday (7 o.clock start) and probably a family party over christmas and i just know he won't hack it. Does anyone else have this problem?

My two, ds2 especially is always up between 6:00 and 6:30 am. It doesn't seem to matter what time he goes to bed. It's only recently that ds2 (6.6) has started to sleep in if he has a late night.

If he has a late night he ends up being a complete ratbag by 4pm the following day, so i really try and limit late nights.

Yes, my ds1, especially, is like this, always wakes up the same time no matter what time he goes to bed. Think he may have dh's problem of insomnia, or difficulty going to sleep anyway. It is hard, but at least your ds doesn't have to go to school or anything over the next few days. You might have to put up with him being a bit grumpy.
