Toddler sleep and transitioning to bed

DS is 2 years 3 months and has never been a great sleeper. We've had various issues. Over the last few months he's done a bit better but we still have very early wakes regularly. Sometimes he will wake at half 3 and refuse to go back to sleep. Other times he will sleep until 6. Some nights he will wake early hours and fall back asleep if I go in and lie on the floor next to his cot or if I take him into the spare room with me.

More recently he's been reluctant to sleep in his cot at bedtime so I've had to move him in after falling asleep.

We decided the time had come to try switching to a bed as he was expressing a dislike for his cot and as his sleep was rubbish anyway. Made the switch tonight. Biggest mistake ever.

Bedtime was a nightmare. Switching between continuously getting out of bed to mess about and moaning about being in bed. Eventually I convinced him to stay in bed for a story and he fell asleep with me there. However an hour later and he woke again screaming and refused to settle. I couldn't calm him down so had to bring him downstairs.

I need advice on how to help him switch to the new bed and stay in there! Is it a case of leaving him to it?

I had the bed next to the wall, then had the cot on the other side, so when they woke up they still saw the bars of the cot.
Plus I used the bed for naps first.
Have you done the whole ‘what a big boy having a whole bed to himself’ thing, letting him choose a duvet cover?

That's a good idea with the cot. We've already taken it down but might have to convince DP to put it back up for a bit!

We have been talking about a big boy bed but he didn't choose the covers. To be honest he doesn't really seem bothered about that sort of thing. I asked him to choose which cuddly toys he wanted to take to bed and he just wouldn't!

Just seem to have got off to a terrible start and now I'm worried there's no hope!
