3YO waking hourly and getting out of bed thru the night - Help!

For just over a week now, DS, just over three, has been impossible to put to bed. Normally no problem but now he screams the house down and follows us downstairs. I can't keep him in his room as he can get under/over stairgate. When we do get him to sleep (have tried sitting him on chair downstairs with TV off and everything boring; lying on his bed; sitting in his room etc) but an hour later and EVERY HOUR THROUGH THE NIGHT he is out of bed like a shot and screaming around the house, usually waking younger sister and our neighbours. He says he wants to sleep in our bed. We resisted for 6 nights but last night, on our knees, put him in bed with Daddy and he slept through perfectly. Have tried threats, softly softly, bought new Thomas duvet cover etc but nothing has worked and if anything, it's getting worse. We've never felt so out of control of a situation and powerless to do anything (nor so tired). Can anyone help please? We're desperate.

Why don't you let him sleep in your bed for a while - it looks as if it's really really important to him at the moment, and maybe he'll get over this need when he sees that he can if he wants to.

or how about trying star charts and a present if he stays in bed?
