Regression or waking out of feeding habit?

Hello, I have a 4mo baby and in the last 2-3months he was pretty good with his sleep, falls asleep at 8 (although the sleeping routine/feeding takes a while) and then he would wake up anywhere between 2-5am once or twice for a feed and then we'd get up around 7-8.. Last week he started waking up even before 12 and then every 2hours or even almost every hour on a bad night. I feed him, he falls asleep, and he's back in the cot. I thought it is the 4month regression but now I worry he is waking up out of habit expecting a feed. I assumed once he's on solids he will be fuller and sleep through but then I read about babies waking up to feed and ai don't want to get him in this habit but don't know how to settle him without the boob. I tried rocking him and he'd calm down but wake up relatively soon after again so I'd assume he's hungry and feed him.
