I have a really sore throat and the normal paracetomal tablets where just not touching the pain. So yesterday I got some Paracetomol 'Extra' they contain, paracetamol, aspirin and cafeine. I don't drink tea or coffee so apart from chocolate am not used to a lot of cafeine but I didn't think about it. They worked really well for the pain but I went up to bed at midnight and my brain was just buzzing - body dead tired and I was yawning but brain on over-drive. It was awful. I tried reading, getting up, picked up some toys, lay still, got into bed with dd, also kept drifting off for a second then waking up with a totally dry mouth so had to have a sip of drink and then a wee. AS I watched the hours go by I felt more and more desperate and could feel my heart racing. Anyway, I finally drifted off for more than a minute at about 4.15am - then at 4.45am dd2 was up and seemed to think it was morning - the only thing I could do was get into her bed and breasfeed her but she was being a bit strange and wouldn't let me take her off the breast (and I didn't have the strength to do anything about it) so she basically fed till 6.45am whilst I dozed. Then at 6.45am we were all up for the day.

The problem is that I used to suffer from pretty bad insomnia when I was pregnant and ended up being prescribed Diazepam. Part of the problem then was that if I had one bad night I would then worry about it all day and by the time I got to bed I had worked myself up into such a state that I then couldn't sleep. I'm already worrying about tonight

Jenkeywoo, try not too worry too much about tonight I'm sure you know all the tips for trying to get a good nights sleep, but a hot bath before bed should help and if you've still got a sore throat then I think a hot toddy works a treat (juice of a fresh orange and lemon, splash of whisky, hot water and honey). On the plus side you're also bound to be tired after last night so hopefully you'll be able to get to sleep ok. Oh - and if you can manage it then try to get out in the fresh air this afternoon coz that should help too...

can you change habits for tonight? Sleep on the sofa with the TV on? Might not actually 'going to bed' help break the mindset of you're going to have a bad night iyswim? Watch TV with a pillow and blanket and if you drop off, wonderful?

Thank you - I just fell asleep for 30 mins whilst getting the dd's to have their nap but I forced myself up so I will hopefully be really sleepy tonight. It must have been the cafeine as over the course of the day my heart has stopped racing too. I visited my 86 year old Grandad this morning and he said he is up like this all night every night. Kind of put it into perspective a bit for me. Right, off to make chicken soup now before the dd's arise from their sleep and demand my full attention straight away.
