2-1 nap transition and terrible nights

My baby has on three days this week only decided to have one nap and nighttime sleep has been a wobble! He’s not on a nap schedule, I just watch his cues and keep half an eye on how long he’s been awake before trying a nap. He’s had a few one nap days in the last month but not consistently at all like this week.

His nighttime sleep hasn’t been very good since 3.5 months but we were getting to a nicer place of 2-3 wake ups. The occasional one nap days before this week were usually followed by slightly better nighttime sleep! Hurrah! Now the past two nights have been AWFUL! The first one nap day again ended with a better than average night, but then it all went to pot. He sleeps on a floor bed and ever since we transitioned him almost two weeks ago he only fell off once on the first night. I was already considering taking his old cot mattress up which I’d put next to his bed as a softer landing, and then last night he fell off three times! He was twitchy and startled a lot all night, and I ended up sleeping there with him for the most of the night as he would stir and wake up as soon as I even tried to shimmy away. And now I’m so sore this morning from sleeping so stiffly again 😩

My question is if this is related to the nap transition that for a little while his system is just a bit… off? Or is something else more likely going on? In the day he is absolutely delightful! He’s not forced to skip naps, he does this himself. Yesterday I attempted the morning nap twice and then delayed an hour each time when it didn’t work, and then he finally took it without any grumbling. So his daytime energy and happiness suggests he might be ready, but nighttime is a different story!

He is 9 months old today, so early to drop to one nap but he’s been early to drop all previous extra naps too.

My child is 9 months next week. Last few days also seems to be dropping a nap - napping for a couple hours at midday. Though DC also reverted back to a few day time naps - provoked from teething pain. We sleep trained, so night sleep is thankfully not an issue.

I think this is one of the areas where one has to trust their gut / instinct and follow their lead of the child. If they show the cues of being tired then I guess hold out.

We will be starting nursery in a month anyway, and I expect that will shift napping pattern
