Transitioning from cosleeping to in the cot

Hi Mumsnet,
My LO is 6 months old, after Christmas I’m hoping to try and put him down in the cot, we have been co sleeping since he was 3 months as he was too big for the Moses basket but hated the cot (I did it to all the SIDS guidelines)
The last month we have had the cot with the side off pushed against our bed, our mattress and the cot mattress are the same height, we’ve been putting him in the cot but he always ends up rolling into bed with us - should I put the side back on and see how he gets on?

He has to be held and have his bum patted to fall asleep, should I wait till he can settle himself and then put the side back on? Usually if he wakes in the night and doesn’t need a feed, he’ll fall back asleep after a quick cuddle/hand holding.

I go back to work soon and I really want him in his own room then but I can’t ever see that happening!
Any tips/advice would be great. Does anyone else co sleep/side off cot sleeping? Does baby have to be patted/held like mine? When will he learn to settle himself?

Sorry for all the questions!
