Bed for 9 month old who hates travel cot?

We visit and stay with SIL about once every couple of months but it is becoming a nightmare as DS wont sleep in his travel cot, so one of us ends up in the living room, usually disturbing the whole house.

We started off with a samsonsite bubble cot which he hated, now have a graco petite basinet type thing... which he hates equally.

Can anyone suggest anything? Either an alternative or a way of making the cot more comfortable?

We have bought an ikea cot for my mums as I'm usually there a couple of days a month, but we cant really do this at SIL's as she has 4 kids, plus we arent really there that much.

Its becoming so much of a stress we havent been since before xmas and I'm putting it off as much as I can.

DD was the same in the travel cot - hated it and woke up every 30-90 minutes every night. Solution was to buy an extra matress (though I guess you could try first with lots of extra blankets etc for padding) and this worked a treat, DD sleeps now for normal 11 hours when away.

are you sure it's the cot?

MIL has a cot that is virtually identical to ours, but we still have bedtime angst there, and 10mo DD is a brilliant sleeper at home. I put it down to that fact that the room and everything else there is different.

Sorry, that's not much help! but might save you from buying 12 different travel cots in an attempt to find The One.

To be honest the matteress is crap - its no more than a board really - not sure how I would go about getting a mattress for it as its a weird size?

There are at least two standard size travel cot mattresses, maybe yours is one of them? Call Graco and ask for an extra mattress.

My DTs sleep on a lambskin at home (under a fitted sheet) and when we go away I take the lambskin with us, as I figure it smells homely. Neither are fab sleepers at the best of times but I don't notice any difference (for better or worse) when we go away so it might work?!

Its a petite travel cot so a bit random in size - they were very helpful though, 25 quid inc postage for a 10cm thick one.

Good luck with the new mattress - it made the world of difference to us and we actually started staying over again with family and friends!

I'm hoping, we stay 130 miles away from closest friends and family, I was starting to worry that we'd never leave the house again!!!

Try getting him to sleep in the travel cot at home a couple of times?
Definitely need a good mattress, I used to put folded up towels under the sheet to make it comfier and that helped.

GMM I wrap a spare duvet around the mattress of the travel cot and then put a tight fitted sheet on it so that it is cosy for them.

Have bought matress but might try that too - it'll be like sleeping on a marshmallow

I pad the mattress too - otherwise it makes a sort of rustle/squeaking noise when dd moves and wakes us all up. Just make sure you don't use anything too sinky-inny. I found a cellular coton blanket good, folded over.
