Breaking cycle of night time wake ups

My son will be 5 months next week. We did some "sleep training" (focused more on digestion and awake time than trying to get him to sleep through or anything like that). He was doing so well - once a night wake up. It was all very manageable. Nowadays, he's unsettled and whiny from 2/3am every hour. Only settles on me. When I put him down, he cries. Even if we co sleep, he makes noises every hour. I know it's a phase (isn't everything?!) but how do they break free from this? And can I do anything to speed it along?

Could it be teeth? If little ones are in pain or discomfort then they might struggle to settle in early house when sleep pressure is lower?

@SarahDay1990 yes, definitely got that going on too!
