Hi was wondering if anyone had any tips on sleeping through at 4mnths. My second son has been sleeping through since he was six weeks, but has been waking at 3hr intervals. And every time only calms with a small amount of feed. Very tiring. My other son didnt have teething problems, could this be??

Sounds to me like he may be ready for some solids, but I'm very old fashioned and I'm running for cover right now

my DD did that too and i found out that she was more hungry! (she was on solids at 4m and i had to introduce her 3rd meal) or top up her milks

It won't be due to a need for solids yet - and if he's hungry, milk is better anyway as it has more calories and fats than a bit of baby rice ever did! I have plenty friends who interpreted this as a need for solids and whose babies slept even worse (!) once they started weaning!

I'm going to link you to a great site by a wise lady called Moxie who explains a bit about the 4 month sleep deterioration that seems remarkably common. I think most people experience it to a degree but feeding more frequently with milk is all you need do diet wise.

Agree with Chubby, defintely doens't mean he's ready for solids. My ds2 was huge at 4 months and didn't need any food until 6 months.

Signs that show they are ready for weaning are being able to sit unaided, able to pick up the food and put it into their own mouths, chew and swallow and the tongue thrust reflex disappearing among other things.

Some babies will just wake in the night after sleeping longer, one of those things. My ds2 is 1 on Friday and still wakes 4-5 times a night for feeds. Completely normal imo.

Probably a bit early to expect baby to sleep through the night... but on the other hand, I would be ready for the funny farm if i was feeding a one year old 4-5 times a night so big respect to Jodie!

I gave v. small amount of baby rice at 4mnths (I know, terrible aren't I - but I'm an old fashioned old thing and think 6mnths is far too long to wait) and gradually noticed an improvement. Very gradually. Finally she was waking just once at about 5am. Then she did 7pm-7am at 6mths, but that was because we did three nights of cold turkey. We knew she was ready at that stage though - don't do that at 4mths.

Give it a bit of time and things might settle all by themselves!

Sorry to be controversial Jodie but I wouldn't say that waking 4-5 times in the night for feeds at one is "normal". In fact I would say that it is probably quite unusual. Surely your ds is waking because he knows he will be fed rather than because he needs the feeds.
