4 mo can't seem to stay awake longer than 1 hour

I keep reading he should be able to have 2 hour wake windows by now, but once he's been up an hour he starts getting really whiny and upset and goes straight to sleep if I put him down for a nap... He can nap for around 1.5hrs (obviously sometimes they are shorter), so it's not causing rubbish naps particularly. However he's still waking at least once a night for a feed and a couple of dummy replacements - could this be caused by not enough wake time?

He's generally happy, alert, growing and feeding well and hitting milestones, so I'm not worried about a health problem, just what it's impact on sleep might be. Do some babies just have shorter wake windows?

Thanks!

It sounds as if he’s doing great in every way so if you’ve no other worries he sounds to be a baby who likes his sleep. One of my DGC was like that - a first in our family. Literally was up for an hour or two (max) and then would go back to sleep for a few hours . Still having 2 hour naps after lunch at 3 years. Bright as a button and happy and healthy otherwise.

Just like all adults have different sleep patterns, so do babies. Your baby hasn’t read the baby books so he doesn’t know what he ‘should’ be doing.

Your baby is still so tiny, and it’s perfectly normal for him to wake occasionally in the night.

If you baby is otherwise happy and ok I really wouldn’t worry about it just yet.

Their sleep patterns change very quickly in the early years.

Some need more sleep than others. Some wake more frequently than others.

Don't worry about it. Babies don't read the guide book. Let baby sleep when they want. I'd only try to do a routine at 6months until then just follow the baby's ques. Smile

Try the huckleberry app, I’m sure at 4m mine was the same. At almost 6m now her wake windows are only 1.5hr

The guide I followed had a 1.5hr max awake window for a 4mo. One wake per night for a feed is pretty good...it is physiologically normal to wake in the night for feeds for the first 12 months at least. My 8mo still has 2 night feeds... on a good night, 4 on a bad night!
