Any tips for stopping co-sleeping with 16 month old?

I've been co-sleeping from 6 months old out of desperation to get some sleep and I'm at the point I'd like to sleep in my own bed with DP for an entire night! DS currently goes down very well in his cot at the start of the night (usually falls asleep on me or DP or very occasionally can be put down sleepy and patted on the bum), and can be resettled once or twice before 11pm if needs be but when he wakes after this time we really struggle to get him back down in his cot and I just give up as I just want to sleep. I'm prepared to spend a few nights working through this and sleep on the floor of his room if I need to but I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips?

We stopped breastfeeding a month ago and I exchanged this for milk in the night to get him off the boob, but I've now stopped this too and just offered water and he's doing really well. I think in a couple of weeks when he's fully used to no milk it'll be time to stop the co-sleeping! Part of the problem is he's always full of cold from nursery so that wakes him a lot but I can't see that ending any time soon.

Thanks
