do you try and last them out so they go at the normal time or do you put them to bed anyway and risk cocking their routine up?

put them to bed!

DS is going to bed earlier than ever at the mo - before 6.30 pm. He still wakes around 6.30 am

an over tired grumpy baby is harder to settle IME, and may wake more/earlier

we have a portable dvd player we use only in emergencies, if it's dd (6), i get her in her pj's early and she gets in bed and watches a dvd, but with ds (2.5), i'd just try and string him out, sit down, bit of telly or a book and a cuddle, give a snack for an extra boost of energy.

My dd (9 months) goes to bed anytime between 6 and 7 - depending on how tired she is. As soon as she shows signs of being tired I put her to bed otherwise she becomes over tired, cranky and is harder to put down. I have never found that it disrupts her routine. She always gets up at the same time.
