7 month old standing up and crawling all night long!!

My 7 month old BFed baby has never been a very good sleep but for the past month he has been shocking.

he goes down in the evening fine and can settle himself to sleep but then he wakes up every couple of hours and stands up in his cot again and again and again!

At first I thought it was his teeth waking him as he had a lot of symptons...red cheeks, drooling etc but this has been going on for over three weeks.

He has been early to crawl and stand and has a real determination about him and I have a horrible feeling he will not relax at night until he has mastered walking as well...and then he will probably want to master sequence dancing or something.

Has anyone had a similar experience and is their light at the end of the tunnel?

Do you put him in a baby sleeping bag? This may confuse him/ stop him standing for a while.......(nano second, he seems very determined ).

Thanks Teacake but sadly he is already in a sleeping bag but that does not seem to stop him!!! he is on a mission to complete a marathon by 1 !!

I have tried using a sheet too, to grip him to the bed but that does not stop him either!!

i know he will grow out of it but don't really want to wait till he is 4 !!!

Has anyone got a good experience of their baby miraculously stopping this over night?

I didn't want to suggest this straight off but would you try pram reins?

It worked for my DS, who would not lie down to sleep at night. It sounds a bit macabre I suppose, but tying him down was the only way to keep him in the cot, (by 8 months was beginning to haul himself out over the side!) .

We only used it when he first went to bed and took it off as soon as he was asleep. It took a month before he got the hint, but even now at 5yo he just jumps (literally) into bed and lies downs straight away.

I know it sounds a bit extreme but it really did work for us, and I know of others who have done it too. If you think about it, you wouldn't dream of letting them sleep in the pram/ buggy without the reins on, and it's only for about 10 mins till they're asleep.

sounds like a good idea - and i don't think it would be cruel if we take them off like you said - afterall he needs a decent night's sleep - it's been three weeks of this craziness! might try and purchase some this aft - thanks!

How much sleep does he get during the day?

I guess more than usual as he is tired after a night of cot exercise?

I think you will have to brake this habit. Maybe by not letting him nap so much or for as long during the day. Especially as it nears bedtime, dont let him nap at all.

What do you do when he wakes? Is he getting any stimulation to maybe encourage his waking? Do you put the lights on? Talk to him? Play with him? Anything at all?

Does he cry or want up? If not, I'd just leave him to it to be honest. DS does all sorts at night in his cot!

it is milestone waking and really common

when babies learn a new skill they want to practise it

DS went through a phase of sitting up in his cot, and couldn't figure how to lie back down

he would cry, so we would go in and tuck him in with a minuimum of fuss, keeping the room as dark as possible

it is a phase, and it will pass

Wel he has two naps in the da - one at about 9 for 45 mins and then one at lunch for an hour or so and if he is really struggling another half an hour or so at 4pm ....athough it is the same deal for naps - he stands up again and again until eventually he gives in...

...the issue at night though is that i probs give in before he does becasue I am tired and either give him a rock or feed him...but some nights this is after 18 times of lieing him down with no nice cuddles or food....do you think he is wise to it all and knows i'll give in?

ds has just learnt to crawl and sit on his bum (from hands and knees). He started at end of Oct and we haven't had a decent night since, it feels like he's taken a step back as he used to sleep well
How long will it last?

It is - babies get very excited when they learn to do something new

the phase lasts as long as they are unable to "right" themselves - i think with DS it was a couple of weeks on and off

i think the most important thing is to try to keep the re-settling as quiet and quick as possible

The problem will my ds is that he has got the skills early but not the sense!! i am teaching him how to sit down on his bum but when he is tired he can go anyway and I worry about him smacking his head on the cot.

That's interesting, thanks. I just hope he gets over the novelty soon! He's crawling much more confidently now so hopefully it won't be long.
Now I think about it, we had broken nights when he learnt to roll over as well.

Hi my baby is seven months old and she is also standing in the cot,tonight she fell back and hit her head on the end of the cot i felt terrible. She hates to be put down into the cot and as soon as i do it she beings screaming and pulls herself up. I dont know how she is going to learn to fall asleep on her own if she is just standing, she is even in a sleepsuit. I am determied to get her into a good sleeping routine but her dad is not keep to do CC and im not sure if im strong enough, I have tried it before and it worked to an extent but this was before the standing. I need help, as soon as she wakes up and realises she is in the cot she is up and screaming again.

My baby DD (8 months' old) was doing waking in the night and standing up - almost compulsively, and has mostly stopped.

If she wakes and we don't get to her quickly, she will stand up (sleeping bag makes no difference), but she is asleep again within seconds of being put back on her back. However, the constant standing (almost like sleep standing) and not knowing how to get back down has really eased off.
