Seasoned co-sleepers - what did you do with your little crawler?

Can only find stuff about very little ones in bed or toddlers. Is putting the mattress on the floor the only option (we already have a bed rail)? After an hour of excited squealing and wriggling from our 6 month old last night at 2 am had visions of being woken at all hours by her crawling round the bed and plopping off the edge! Is it really like that, how have you found it?

We used a sleeping bag thingy from about 4 months, which seems to help with the wriggling!
