16 month old getting very distressed during the night

My twins are 16 months old and still in our room due to lack to space (in the process of moving house). They both stir when we come up to bed, no matter how quiet we are, and DT2 fusses for a few moments and then settles back down.

DT1 starts off that way too, but within a few minutes she escalates to blood-curdling screams! I have no idea what's distressing her so much, but it's getting worse each night and harder to soothe her. Any suggestions what might be causing this or how to help her?

Night terrors?

Meant to add that once DT1 settles again, she's then fine for the rest of the night. It's literally only when we come to bed.

I did wonder about night terrors - my eldest had them at that age. But I would have thought the screaming would be more instantaneous upon waking, rather than taking a few minutes to start?

Night terrors? I’ve only had experience of an older child having them but there is no point trying to comfort them. I used to gentle ease DD back to lying down and just whisper sleep at her until she nodded off again.
