How old was yours when they went into a big bed.

Hello!!

When and why did you decide to put your child from cot to big bed?

And how did it go?

We're potty training and she's still in a cot and so thinking I need to think about moving from cot to big bed at some point in the not to distant future in order to come away from pull ups! But she's 2years and 2 months so not sure if she's ready. She always sleeps quite close to the bars xx

When ours was about two she was too heavy for me to lift her in and out of her cot (cot-bed) anymore so we took the side off and used a foam wedge to stop her rolling out in the night.

She’ll be four in April and she’s just gone into her first proper bed. We need the cot bed for baby #2 who is due soon.
Each stage has been fine and she found it quite exciting.

She has a gro-clock too and knows to stay in bed until “the sun comes up” or unless she needs to use the toilet.

Eldest two were before the age of two. No problems with them.

Nighttime dryness is based on a hormone. My second was a few months off being three when she dropped her off night nappies and, like her big sister, just went through the night without needing a wee anyway.

DS was 3, he went from his cot to a low level bunk bed. He never climbed out of his cot for some reason.

Mine were quite late. Dd moved into a big bed at 4 but her cot was a bedside one so no side so she could get in and out easily for toileting and spent a lot of time partially in the bed with me. She’s gone into a big bed with a safety side as she moves around a lot otherwise shed fall out!

I personally think anything 2+ is acceptable, any younger and I’d be worried about a scenario like that one in the news recently with the poor baby who go stuck between a bunk bed ladder and the mattress and died.

The foam protector sounds good!!! I know DD will love it... I think I'll wait until she is fully clean in the day (2 days with no accidents on day 5 and hoping it continues) ... then give it a few months of being used to that and then seeing if the big bed and a little toilet potty works! X

Mine high-jumped out of the cot at about 20 months, to great alarm, so we took the sides off. We moved not long after that so sold the cot bed and bought a low single bed.

About 17 months- the day he climbed out of his cot twice in 5 minutes.

DD1 was only in a cot from 3 to 6 months, then she slept with me on the mattress on the floor. She went into her own big girl bed at 22 months. she potty trained at 25 months, she was dry over night before 3 and is nearly 5 now and has never woken over night because she needed a wee.

Dc1 = 18m
Dc 2 = 2.3
Dc 3 = 15 m

Like absolutely everything else with bairns: whenever suits you and yours.

17 months, into a toddler floor bed. We thought she would be in and out and very upset. She is a creature of habit. She just went to sleep as if it was nothing. We had prepared ourselves for a night of hell.

As a pp mentioned night time dryness can’t be taught and it relies on them producing the correct hormone which can take up to the age of 7. Children who sleep well tend to produce it later.

They were both just past two. It probably would have been earlier but Christmas got in the way. We had a cot bed so the bed part was close to the ground so didn't bother with guards are anything. They were both pretty good at staying in bed until morning despite being hideous sleepers. We left a potty in their room for over night use, they would us the toilet in the day.

I think some of these mum decisions we can really overthink and they just take it in there stride don't they!!

DS was 2y 3m and went into full size single with side rail as we needed the cotbed for DD. Turned cotbed into bed at 2y 2m for DD (she decided the day we did that to potty train herself) and just after 3 went into a full size single. Small beds are great for a time but we couldn't lie down with DD to read as we had with DS which is why we changed to a single quite soon afterwards.
