Ds2 now 8months used to sleep well in the day. 30 mins in the morning 8.30-9 and then a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. Lately he has pushed his morning nap back to 9.30- 10 because he simply will not sleep any earlier. Probably a habit as we drop ds1 off at school and are home by 9.20 and he is in his cot at 9.30. sometimes 9.45. Now in the afternoon he is beginning to sleep for 40mins and when he goes through his "light sleep" period he will wake and will not go back to sleep anymore. I have tried to put him down in his cot again at about 3pm to see if he'll have 30mins but he doesn't and therefore winges from 1.30p.m till he falls asleep on his 6.30pm bottle. The other day I cut out his morning nap, and although he moaned continuosly till he went to sleep at 12.15 he slept solidly till 2.30.
So after ranting on my question is do I cut out the am nap ajd let him moan till after lunch but then he will have a 2 hour nap or do I continue with a short nap in the am and afternoon but then he moans till bedtime. AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!! I am more inclined to cut out the am nap but mum still thinks he is too young and parents always have a way of making you feel like you are really horrid to your children.

We had similar with ds now 2.5 and still sleeping after lunch for up to 2 hours. Personally I would drop the morning sleep to preserve the afternoon nap. Similarly if there was any sign of him not sleeping 12 hours at night, I would cut back the pm nap.

DS didn't drop his am nap until 11 months but it sounds like yours is ready.

Hi Moosh , I am having the same quandry and my DD is 13 months ! She did not drop her 3rd nap till 8 months and now I have tried to drop her morning nap but she is soooo tired and cannot wait till lunch nap so I have to put her down at 11:30 . However, like your DS , she then sleeps a good 2.5 hrs soundly and deeply. However, like you, I am wondering if it is worth the grizzly morning .
How long does DS's am nap last for ? Also, what time are you putting him down for his lunch nap ? I would suggest a) cutting his am nap to 15 mins and/or b) putting him down for his lunch nap sufficiently later to make sure that he is exhausted by the time he sleeps.
I wonder if he is waking earlier because he wasn;t tired enough in the first place and therefore treated it as a lazy 40 winks .
I have concluded myself that I would continue the morning nap as it was no fun having a grumpy, clingly baby from 9:30am-12pm !

Good luck .. let me know how it goes (wink)

Thankyou guys, lovinit, he used to go down in the morning at 8.30 and have 30 mins but since ds1 has started school he goes down now at 9.30 or 9.45 but still has 30 mins. At lunchtime I have pushed the time back so that he is more tired from 12 to 12.45 and wake him at 2.30 or 2.45. But I think that he is not tired enough after lunch, ds1 had dropped his am nap by now and had a long aftrenoon nap but he never grizzled just got on with it till it was lunch then nap. I think I will try dropping it for a few days in a row to see how he gets on, I shall let you know.
