3 month old waking at night but not hungry

My three month old baby has always been very noisy at night, with regular wakings since he was born. He's now three months old and is waking at 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. He isn't hungry and we have tried leaving him to cry between 2:00 and 4:00. He cries on and off during this time and then really bellows at 4:00. We have tried leaving him but this doesn't work. We end up walking around with him or calming him with a dummy or cool boiled water. Do any of you have any solutions as he has shown he's capable of going through the night in terms of not wanting to be fed. We're totally exhausted and desperately need some tips!

Many thanks.
xx

Is he in a sleeping bag? It's the solution to most night-time sleep problems .

dd2 is 4 and a half months and had been doing the same - I noticed her hands were freezing last night. She is in a sleeping bag. Should I put a blanket on her too? She is small for her age - maybe she is really bad at keeping warm - but i don;t want to overheat her

We always go in to check on our ds and dd last thing before we go to bed. If the back of the neck just inside the sleeping bag feels cool then we put a blanket on over the bag. When they were tiny (less than 6m, so more concerned re cot death) we would pop a cardie on over the sleeping bag, rather than add a blanket.

We're told that cold hands in a little baby are normal, and not a sign that the baby is actually cold, but I have found with both children that they seemed to sleep better if their hands were not cold.

might try a cardie tonight. she hasn't had them before. i hate being cold and can't sleep, so it stands to reason. am concerned about too many layers though
