what actually happens if you wake someone who is sleep walking?

because dd2 is going through a sleep talking/walking.screaming/self harm phase.

what do i do? she was just clawing at herself in her sl;eep and screaming.

please, someone.

because i am unsure on whther to bring her round and stop her hurting herself. or just try and stop her whilst she is still asleep.

I'd imagine they would be very disorientated and could be distressed. My ds gets like this if he is woken suddenly from a deep sleep, he really screams and it takes ages to calm him down. Don't know what to do about the scratching whilst asleep tho'. Is she too hot or overtired?

its not itchy clawing. its like she is trying to get something off of her.

seems to be everynight lately.

she does actually sleep walk as well. caught her trying to pee in the wardrobe last week.

Is it night terrors? If so, in my experience, the child can't be woken. You have to ride it out.

Is your dd2 looking like she is awake, able to answer questions, yet actually asleep, and talking random nonsense and lashing out at things - if so that is probably night terrors. Esp she doesn't remember it in the morning.

Advise is to just keep them safe while they do it, it is worse for the parents than the child. If they happen at about the same time each night, you could try waking then up just before to stop the cycle?

she had NT when she waqs 3. these are a lot worse now.

its bloody scary.

When you are sleep walking you are sort of semi awake,but think what you are doing is actually quite normal. I walked down three flights of stairs in just a T.shirt and knickers into a crowded bar looking for a hamster!! (luckily it was my dads pub)
When I'm sleep walking now my DH just very calmly takes me back to bed,or if I am talking he just reassures me that I'm dreaming. Definately don't try and shake or wake the person too quickly or it becomes confusing and distressing as you can't work out whats happened straight away.If she is clawing at herself just gently pull her arms away and tell her that its mummy and that she is dreaming and you'll make all the bad things go away.Hope that helps!!

Thats when I get really bad.

I used to sleepwalk LVOC and it wasn't nice waking up. I woke up once sitting on the front step; and lying on the floor with my head under the radiator usually sleep walkers are quite compliant and if you say calmly, go back to bed or lie down and go to sleep, they will.

dd2 sounds more like a night terror TBH - especially if it's very regular. It's hard to wake them from night terrors - ds2 used to have them all the time. Does she seem to start at a particular time? Sometimes if you wake them before it starts it can break the cycle.

Triplet - my radiator experience was to do with a hamster. How odd is that?!?

she started school last month, and also dh had a transplant over the summer, so could all be that i guess.

I was in my nightie. Actually I can't sleep naked and I think it's to do with my . I worry I might end up in the street in my birthday suit.

ME TOO!! Even in the summer,I have to wear something,or i think,what if I wander outside and give my neighbour a heart attack?

My dd1 got them for 3 weeks almost solid earlier this year. Then they stopped as soon as they had started. Could see no obvious reason why they happened.
She has has a couple in the last few weeks as well, she seems more prone when she is overtired and when she gets growing pains in her legs at night.
It is horrid watching, but there is nothing you can do. Have tried shaking her awake - doesn't work. Neithrr does reassuring her - it just doesn't get through (although if you ask her her name and age etc she can tell you - bizarre).I just take comfort in the fact she has no recollection in the morning.
Hope they pass soon...

dh sleep walks very occasionally - usually after a combo of beer and curry. He once wandered out into a hotel corridor in the alltogether, trying the adjacent doors. He was looking for the bathroom (we had an ensuite) Was very funny in the morning but not at the time. I was in a complete panic as he wouldn't come back!

LVOC - she's been through a lot. It's probably just 'coming out' in her sleep. Hopefully the waking will help otherwise try changing her evening routine a little.

I am so sorry that your Dd and you are going through this.

I does sound more like Night terrors to me.

If you wake someone who is sleep walking, hey are very disorientated and distressed and it can cause terrible panic attacks.

I does sound like she is suffering some trauma with everything your familey is going through and starting school etc.

I would talk to your gp or hv.

Can you talk to her and see if anything is bothering her? maybe she can draw or paint you a picture of what she is frightened of?

Hope it all gets sorted for you. sounds like you have all been through a lot lately.

It do sound like night terors. Can you try waking her just after it subsides - you might get some sense out of her as to what is worrying her; my dd had them at about 3 and we did that and then when she was awake we would matter of factly talk about whatever she had been dreaming aboutand slowly they subsided.

If she has just started school is there anything happening htere that may be distressing her subconciously?
