Is my baby sleeping too much?

Hi. My DS is 12 weeks old. I notice that in the last week or so he has been extra sleepy. Last night he went down at 7.30pm, woke at 2am and 5.30am for a feed, then was asleep until 10am. He stayed awake for 1 1/2 hours and then started yawning, was very grumpy and was clearly in need of a nap. So I put him down and he was almost immediately asleep. Can babies sleep too much?

People already comment he is a big baby. He is almost 14 lbs. I worry that he may get into the habit of sleeping too much and not being active enough (kicking about under his play gym, etc).

It won't be long before he's more active - bigger babies are easier to settle I think - mine were always small and took quite a while to get there. My sisters (big) baby used to wake at 5.30 and she always "assumed" it was his "beginning of the day" and would feed him and he would promptly be asleep before an hour had passed for at least another couple of hours or so... And he slept for England that baby - all the time!!!

He is as active a 2 year old as any you might meet.

Enjoy it whilst it lasts - seriously

P.S. Most people agree after 2 hours most babies need a nap again - mine certainly did.

By 12 weeks my baby was sleeping through and I wasn't feeding him during the night. If he woke, he'd get offered his dummy instead of a feed. He sleeps 12/13 hours now and he's almost 11 months. He goes to bed at 7.30pm and wakes around 8am. Weekends when no one else is up he'll sleep until 9 or 10 am.

Have you thought about trying to cut out a feed to see if he get's more sleep during the night?
