Next to me cot safe for a rolling baby?

Hi all just looking for some opinions/thoughts.

My 5 month old has now learned how to roll and he now prefers to sleep on his tummy - as terrifying as it is for me! He seems very comfortable this way and touch wood - he has been sleeping sounder than he ever has in the last 8 weeks now that he's mastered this skill.
My only concern now is that a) the next to me cot is too small for him to roll about and find a comfy position and b) whether it should even be used once baby is rolling?

My dilemma is that he doesn't have a cot just yet. We are moving house and things have been delayed due to COVID. We were hoping to be in the new house and have his nursery set up by now.
This means that the only alternative for him at the moment is to sleep in the bed with me until we eventually move (hopefully by August). Either that or I continue trying to get the last bit of use out of the next to me cot.

I am worried about him getting used to sleeping in a bed with me though and then him not being able to transition to a cot very well.

What are people's opinions? Shall I preserve wirh the next to me cot or shall I allow him to bed share with me until we move house? Any experiences of the transition to a cot eventually from bed sharing?

Thanks in advance.

Personally I wouldn't put him in the bed especially if he can roll with all the duvets and pillows. My DS was in his next to me until 8 months old. He never really rolled though until he was in his cot. I only moved him from the next to me because I woke up to him stood up in it going through my bedside table (he never stood in this before). I found the next to me quite roomy though.

I have a similar crib for my 6 mo (almost 7 months now), and use it with all the sides up. It’s a tight squeeze but he can happily sleep on his tummy and has enough space to roll back if needed. Used in that way it will be safe until he learns how to sit up. Once that happens he’ll need to go into a cot.

We used a travel cot for DS2 after he grew out of his Moses basket as DS1 wasn’t quite old enough for a bed, so that could work as an interim option.

This was him at 8 months old and as you can see there was still quite a bit of space in it. The sides were always up when he was sleeping though. Never had it attached to my bed. Sides down in this picture because I was there with him Smile

Thanks so much for the replies!

@SpillTheTeaa is that the Chico next to me side crib? We have the Tutti Bambini Cozee and whilst it's fine length wise, width wise it's not so great! And from what I can see online, the width of the Chico is far better and bigger than the one we have!

We borrowed this next to me crib from my SIL but if I was buying new, I'd probably have gone for the Chico as it's the most popular choice from what I gather.

@GrumpyHoonMain thank you for this... I think I'll give it a go with him in it tomorrow night with the sides up and see if it makes a difference. So far every time I've tried him in it with the side down he ends up mid-roll with his legs in the bed!

Yes it is a chicco. Sorry I assumed when you said next to it was chicco but no you're right some of them are tiny from what I've seen.

We used our next to me until DS was 9 months and could barely fit in it - he still managed to find plenty of ways to move around. I would often wake up with him 180 degrees round from where I put him! We just put the side up and let him get on with it. It was much easier than when he went into his cot and realised he had so much space to explore!

@SpillTheTeaa I think the Chico one is the most popular. Having looked at the dimensions online, it's definitely bigger than the one I have! It's not ideal but I think he'll have to stay in the bed with me for the next few weeks. I always make sure the pillows and duvet etc are away from him.

@mynameiscalypso great use in using up until 9 months! My 5 month old is quite long length wise and so hes almost completely filled the whole crib... when I put his feet towards the bottom he hasn't got a lot of room at the top so I feel I keep in it any longer he will just continue to wake himself (and me) up!

Hubby will just have to stay in the spare room for the time being... not that he is complaining!
