Toddler afraid of the dark

Hi,

My toddler has suddenly developed a fear of the dark and is struggling to fall asleep. He has always been a good sleeper and our bedtime routine is pretty simple, Bath, bottle, story and bed. Now, just as i’m finishing the last line of a story, he starts to pipe up “I don’t like the dark”, “I don’t like the dark anymore”. He has a nightlight on and that doesn’t seem to help unless it’s close by and on its brightest setting - honestly it’s like Blackpool illuminations in there! This fear is affecting his naps and he’s waking up around 5am. The strange thing is that my son loves playing in his bedroom and likes it to be dark like a cave and even encourages me to make it darker! Yet come bedtime or nap time, he absolutely hates the dark! I’m so confused and it’s really getting to me. I suffer from terrible PMT and I’m afraid of losing my temper. I just feel so stuck! I don’t know what to say to him that would help.

Just get him a lamp.

Both of my dc have slept in the pitch black up to a point, after which they've decided to use a lamp at night time. They sleep great so I don't care if they need it or not.

We got dimmer switches put on the switches for the main, overhead light. So kept light on all night, but dimmed down.

Or get a lamp. Night lights don't give out much light at all
