3.5 year old waking at night, refusing to go back to sleep

As the title says, my 3.5 year old DS woke up at 2am last night and refused to go back to bed. Tried a quick cuddle sitting on his toddler bed, and in the end had to resort to sitting on the chair in our room (where DH was trying to sleep) until he fell asleep on me, then lifted him back to bed around 5am.
The same thing happened the weekend d before last, and he's been waking earlier in general recently. He's moved to a toddler bed at the end of August and started preschool in September. He's settled there now and really enjoys it.
Thing is, he fell headfirst into a big puddle yesterday so maybe he had a nightmare about that? He may be getting cold at night so had the heating programmed to come on for a bit. When he woke up crying, he was sat on his pillow with the covers thrown off and his feet were cold.
The biggest problem is he's sharing a room with 6 year old DD so I feel I can't just let him scream. He kept repeating "no bed" whenever I put him back and started crying instantly.
What on earth can I do?
