Exhausted after driving home from my MIL at 3.30am round the M25 - DD just hates sleeping anywhere other than home. It was an emergency stopover as we tried to go home (as I knew she hated sleeping in MILs cot) earlier but M25 blocked and spent two hours going nowhere so went back to MIL. DD slept 8pm to 12.30am and then refused to go back to sleep she seemed really scared. She went back to sleep once for 15-20mins but moved around (its a metal cot my DH's old cot) and it made a racket and it scared her. Will take travel cot from now on. Have 3 holidays/weekends in the next 6 weeks -dreading it.

What can I do - luckily I had her favourite toy and her taggie blanket last night. Will take our own travel cot for each trip. She slept 12 hours through the night (9 months old) the night before last and was finally in a good day/night routine - now I feel its ruined. She seemed so scared last night...

I think it's probably the unfamiliararity of it that could be making her unable to sleep. Maybe have her in bed with you if it happens again or get her used to the travel cot beforehand so it's not all new for her.
